Apple researchers have developed a groundbreaking framework called ELEGNT (Expressive and Functional Movement Design) that allows robots to move and interact in ways that feel natural and engaging.
Unlike traditional robots that focus solely on completing tasks, ELEGNT enables robots to convey emotions, intentions, and attitudes through their movements—making them feel more like companions than machines.
How It Works?
The research focused on a lamp-like robot (inspired by Pixar’s Luxo Jr.) equipped with a 6-axis robotic arm and a head containing a light and projector. The team programmed the robot with two types of movements:
Functional: Focused on completing tasks (e.g., adjusting lighting).
Expressive: Designed to communicate emotions and intentions (e.g., playful gestures during music playback).
In user testing, expressive movements significantly improved participants’ engagement and perception of the robot, especially during social tasks like playing music or conversing.
